Thursday March 1

Stob Choire Claurigh and Stob Ban, Spean Bridge

Two spectacula­r hills at the eastern end of the Grey Corries ridge make a fine expedition.

Start at the Scout Hut at NN253806, where restricted parking is available, (or 2Km further south at NN255788, but the track is rough). Follow the track around Corriechoi­lle House and continue S through The Lairig, in an area of forest recently cleared.

On emerging from the forest, leave the track and head S up steep rough ground to the summit of Stob Coire Gaibhre, 958m. Follow the rim of Coire na Ceannain S. It narrows to a fine ridge leading up to a summit at 1121m and on to Stob Choire Claurigh, 1177m. Descend SE then S to the col and lochan on the E side of Coire Ràth. A short steep ascent leads to the summit of Stob Ban, 977m. Descend the E ridge which levels out then turns NE down to the bothy in the Lairig Leacach. There is a bridge across the Allt a Chuil Choirean just S of the bothy. Return N on the track to Corriechoi­lle.

Satuday March 3

Meall nam Fiannaidhe­an, Moidart

A short but quite tough walk into the lonely hills of Moidart. Views of Castle Tioram, the Small Isles, Skye and Rois-bheinn.

Start from the A861 Kinlochmoi­dart to Glenuig road at NM 680736 where limited roadside parking is available.

Walk N up the hill along the A861 to the entrance to Kylesbeg, where a burn, An Doir’ Allt, passes under the road. Follow the burn N uphill to Coire Doir’ Uillt where the remains of shielings, lazy beds and a probable still site may be found.

Follow the burn E to the shore of Loch Ard a’ Phuill. Continue E around the N side of the loch, turning S across some burns and up to the summit of Meall nam Fiannaidhe­an, 313m.

Descend S to the col at 243m then W to a long narrow lochan about 400m distant.

Locate a dry stone dyke at the S end of the lochan and follow it S downhill through oakwoods to the footpath about 30m above the A861. This is an old pony track linking Kinlochmoi­dart with Lochailort.

Follow this W to the site of the Iron Age Fort at An Dun NM682735, guarding the narrows of Loch Moidart.

Rejoin the main road return to the start

Sunday March 4 Beinn Odhar Mhor, Beinn Odhar Bheag, Glenfinnan Cross the River Etive, then take Start from the lay-by on the A830, where limited parking is available.

Cross the railway and head SW up uneven slopes on the NW side of the Allt Coire a’ Choin Duinn. Following the fall-line, the route curves S past a lochan at NM846801, then SE to the summit of Beinn Odhar Mhor. Follow the undulating and sinuous ridge S, curving SE up to the summit of Beinn Odhar Bheag. Return by the same route
