Liberty bring Wheelers more pedal power

-

MORE youngsters from West Highland communities will get the chance to make their names as top mountain-bike competitors thanks to new sponsorship.

Liberty, part of the GFG Alliance, has contributed £1,000 to help train adult volunteers to coach young members of the West Highland Wheelers club in mountain biking skills.

The sheer popularity of the junior section of the club, which caters for six- to 14-year-olds, has stretched the resources of existing qualified coaches, meaning that many young people were having to join a waiting list to receive their bike training.

Doug Little, chairman of the West Highland Wheelers, said: ‘We have a thriving junior section and support like this ensures it can continue to go from strength to strength and no youngster needs to miss out. Whether they become big stars or not, they all benefit from this sport.’

He added: ‘I’d like also to express my gratitude also to the Lochaber Sports Association for their much-appreciated grant that will also fund training for leaders and ensure a healthy future for the junior section of the club.’

This is Liberty’s latest support package for cycling in the area following the company’s agreement recently to be a major sponsor of two showpiece biking events this year – the Loch Ness Etape on April 29 and the UHI Downhill event on June 2 and 3.

The Wheelers meet at Nevis Range on Saturday mornings from Easter till Christmas, and volunteers – mainly parents of members – take groups of children from age six to 14 on two-hour mountain bike rides around the trails.
