DEVELOPING the Young Workforce West Highland (DYW WH) were delighted to work with Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and West Highland College UHI to promote and celebrate this year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which ran from March 5-9.

There’s more than one way for young people to get into their chosen career. Apprenticeships, whether foundation, modern or graduate, can offer young people a great opportunity to build vocational skills in their chosen field and make an informed choice about their future career.

Last week saw a range of great events about apprenticeships held in all nine partnership high schools across the West Highlands. All the events were attended by staff from local businesses, many of whom are current apprentices or who have already completed an apprenticeship. They shared their inspirational stories of how becoming an apprentice had given them a fantastic way into their chosen careers.

The interactive events allowed the young people to engage with the businesses, ask questions and discover how an apprenticeship might work for them.

The week of apprenticeship celebrations began at Plockton High School on March 6 where S3 pupils benefited from a group talk from two local employers.

The events continued with a packed schedule of presentations, assembly group talks and parents’ evenings at Ardnamuchan, Gairloch, Lochaber, Mallaig, Kinlochleven, Ullapool and Portree high schools, and Kilchuimen Academy. A massive thank you to all of the businesses who kindly gave their time to come and talk to the school pupils.
