Doors open on creative Lego building at The Rockfield Centre

-

A MASTER Builders Lego and Creative Construction Club will hold its first session on Saturday March 31 at The Rockfield Centre (TRC) from 10am till midday.

Run by volunteer Fee Shaw, the club aims to provide a place for families of all ages to meet, build and get creative with Lego and is one of two new additions to the centre’s monthly programme of activities.

Rhona Dougall, TRC arts co-ordinator, said: ‘Building with Lego can be as simple or as complicated as you like, making it accessible to children of all ages and abilities. It is hoped the club will appeal to dads, who can sometimes feel excluded from female-dominated playgroups, as well as to people new to the area whose first language may not be English, enabling them to make connections in the community based around a shared interest. It is also hoped the club will help enthuse girls about building and engineering.’

The idea has already gained widespread support through Facebook and is currently seeking funding through Argyll and Bute Council’s Supporting Communities Fund, voting for which will be open to the public in April.

Meantime, the club will hold a series of pilot sessions to test out what works. While funding is being sought, any donations of second-hand Lego would be gratefully received.

Another new event will be the centre’s first Songshare session, also on March 31, from 2-4pm.

This will be a relaxed get-together for anyone with an interest in folk song, traditional and contemporary, from Scotland and beyond. Refreshments will be provided and participants will be invited to share songs with the group, or just learn new ones. This first session will also feature a discussion on how the group can evolve to stimulate and preserve local folk singing culture.

A wide range of creative groups and activities is hosted every month at TRC as well as the opportunity for anyone keen to get involved in volunteering.
