Oban litter busters pick up a welcome donation

-

KEEP Oban Beautiful has ‘picked up’ 20 litter grabbers to help tidy the town.

The equipment was donated by Graham MacQueen of MacQueen Bros Charitable Trust.

Maurice Wilkins said the litter pliers, adult and child-size, were ‘top-range’ and had been recommended by recycling and litter tidying charity the GRAB Trust.

He said: ‘We are very lucky to get this donation. It now means our volunteers have their own tools to keep Oban beautiful and the group can loan them out to others wanting to help litter pick.’

Mr MacQueen added: ‘If people are going to give up their spare time to help keep the town looking good, the very least we can do is give them the best tools we can.’

Next weekend, Saturday March 24 and Sunday March 25, volunteers across the town will be ridding the streets and open spaces of rubbish as part of a big spring clean being organised by Keep Oban Beautiful. Litter picking gear will be available for groups, from churches to clubs and neighbours, to borrow on the Saturday and Sunday from a hub at Rockfield Community Centre.

Letters have also gone out to hundreds of local businesses, inviting them to take part. MacQueen Bros Removals & Storage is co-ordinating a clean-up of the industrial park where its warehouse is based in Glengallan Road.

Beach cleans will also be held over the weekend with the support of volunteers from Surfers Against Sewage and The Marine Conservation Society. To join them contact Janie Steele on 07530 314127.

Anyone interested in picking a patch elsewhere in the town or joining organised sessions as part of the big clean-up, should contact c.rizos@btinternet.com or call 07891 543540 for more information.
