Oban Symphony’s world premiere is a trumpeting success

-

AN ORCHESTRA performed the world premiere of Oban Symphony last Tuesday in front of hundreds of people at the Corran Halls.

It took Norman a decade to write the piece and after the concert, he received a quaich from Argyll and Bute Council for his commitment to music in Oban.

Norman wrote the symphony for the Oban Bach Orchestra, who were accompanied on the night by Bass Tracks, the Dohnayi Trio and Oban Bach Choir.

Elaine Robertson, councillor for Oban South and the Isles, said: ‘It’s a pleasure and a privilege to present Norman with a quaich from Argyll and Bute Council for all the years of commitment and for his huge contribution to music and culture in the area.’

Elaine said: ‘Norman has given us amateurs of Oban the opportunity to play in an orchestra.

‘He was commissioned to write Oban Symphony a number of years ago and he has done an amazing job.

‘It’s a very complex piece, but enjoyed by all, and we enjoyed playing it. It was exhilarating. I felt very proud of Norman.’

Norman said: ‘I am very pleased to have written a symphony for Oban and to have had it so well received. I also feel greatly honoured to be presented with such a magnificent quaich from the council.’

Speaking about the performance, he said: [The orchestra] did very well. I am very proud of them and how they rose to the occasion.’

Norman said it was rewarding to see the piece he had been writing for a decade come to life.

‘It’s nice to perform the piece, which was well received by the town,’ he added.
