Ready to start walking tour guide training

- KAY MCDONALD editor@obantimes.co.uk

WHAT an amazing Easter we’ve just enjoyed. I can’t believe the perfect weather we had and the amount of visitors who all seemed as happy as I was.

It’s left me happy and full of energy ready for the next adventure which begins this week as a group of us begin training to become walking tour guides with a qualification from the Scottish Tour Guide Association.

The training is being organised by the Port of Oban Welcome Group and Bid4Oban and has been planned for a long time.

I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for the town and for the people lucky enough to be part of it and all being well we should be qualified and ready to welcome visitors by May.

One of the things I’m looking forward to most is learning even more about the town I live in. I’ve not even started yet and I’ve learned from the introductory notes that the name Oban comes from ‘little bay of Lorn’.

I like that and I know I have so much more learning to do. If you see me in the street and think you have a piece of knowledge to share then let me know. It’s the details that are interesting to visitors to the town and locals.

I’ve also had people say that once the tours are operational they may be of interest to people who live here too and I agree as no matter how long you live in a place you can never know it all.

So it’s onward and upward, a step nearer summer and guides to share all the things they love about Oban with everyone else.
