Cup competitions get under way

-

HOLDERS Newtonmore, Kinlochshiel, Lochaber and Caberfeidh all won their cottages.com first round ties, whilst Bute and Col Glen made Glasgow Celtic Society Cup progress following the shinty action on Saturday March 31.

Cottages.com MacTavish Cup – first round Newtonmore 7 Kilmallie 0

Holders Newtonmore are through to the cottages.com MacTavish Cup second round after defeating Kilmallie 7-0 in their 3pm throw up at The Eilan.

Newtonmore’s Steven Mac- Donald was still out, whilst Kilmallie’s Innes Blackhall started a two-match ban.

This was a repeat of last year’s final which Newtonmore won 3-2.

Evan Menzies hit an early double with goals on 17 and 25 minutes putting his side 2-0 ahead.

Ewan Fraser on 36 minutes and David MacLean three minutes later made it 4-0 at the turnaround.

Ewan Fraser got his second a couple of minutes into the second half and Glen MacKintosh made it 6-0 on 54 minutes.

Iain Robinson rounded off the scoring when he made it 7-0 with four minutes remaining.

Kinlochshiel 5 Inverness 0

Marine Harvest Premiership leaders Kinlochshiel were comfortable 5-0 winners over Marine Harvest National Division side Inverness at Kirkton.

Kinlochshiel had Paul MacRae back from injury and he started on the bench alongside Oliver MacRae who has missed the opening weeks of the season as he was abroad. Kinlochshiel were still without Scott MacLean.

Inverness manager Callum McLeod travelled six players light with Dougie Rankin and the suspended James MacKenzie amongst their absentees. James Cameron, Andy Reid and Daniel Palombo were also unavailable. Drew McNeil played at full centre.

John MacRae opened the scoring on 15 minutes when he ran to the edge of the ‘D’ before sending a screamer past a helpless Allan MacLeod in the Inverness goal.

Ali Nixon made it 2-0 on 29 minutes with a tap-in from close range.

Keith MacRae punished a defensive lapse to add a third on 35 minutes and got another a minute before the break.

Kinlochshiel manager Johnston Gill introduced Oliver MacRae for the first time this season at the start of the second half. Young Duncan Matheson also came on.

Jordan Fraser made it 5-0 on 55 minutes. Allan MacLeod had made a save but a scuffed clearance fell for Fraser at the edge of the ‘D’ and he made no mistake.

Captain Paul MacRae played the last 35 minutes on his return from an elbow injury.

Inverness defended well for the remainder of the game, with Allan Macleod keeping out any further efforts on goal.

Kinlochshiel’s Donald Nixon had an outstanding game in the middle of the park.

Beauly 1 Lochaber 2

Premiership side Lochaber came from a goal down to defeat Beauly from the league below 2-1 at Braeview Park.

Beauly’s Liam Girvan returned to Alan MacRae’s squad and started on the bench with Greg Tillman and Daniel Lamont.

Lochaber’s Brian MacDonald was free of suspension and he was also listed as a substitute along with Connor Sweeney, Stuart Matheson and player/manager Neil MacDonald.

Beauly’s Robbie Brindle opened the scoring on 28 minutes but Shaun Nicolson beat home keeper Josh Grant to make it 1-1 with 33 minutes played.

The tie’s decisive goal came five minutes from half time when former Newtonmore player John MacKenzie scored his first competitive Lochaber goal.

Beauly competed well and, if they had taken more of their first half chances, it might have been a different outcome.

However, with no scoring in the second half, it is Lochaber who go forward to this Saturday’s second round draw which takes place at Balgate after the final first round tie between Lovat and Kingussie.

Caberfeidh 8 Strathglass 0

Caberfeidh kept their good recent run going when they beat Strathglass 8-0 at Castle Leod.

Caberfeidh’s Martin MacDonald hadn’t recovered from a hand injury sustained in the league win over Skye the previous week, whilst Hamish Myers will miss the next few months for Strathglass as he is abroad.

Kevin Bartlett made it 1-0 on 14 minutes and Craig Morrison added a second five minutes later.

Bartlett got his second on 28 minutes and Gavin McLaughlan made it 4-0 on 34 minutes.

Kevin Bartlett completed his hat-trick a couple of minutes before half-time to give Caberfeidh a 5-0 lead.

Strathglass had no answer to Kevin Bartlett and he netted a quick-fire double on 60 and 62 minutes to make it 7-0.

Kevin Bartlett made it 11 goals in four games this season when he scored his sixth goal of the afternoon to make it 8-0 on 76 minutes.

Glasgow Celtic Society Celtic Cup – first round Oban Celtic 0 Bute 1

Bute will host Glasgow Mid Argyll in the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup quarter-finals after they beat Oban Celtic 1-0 in their noon throw-up at Mossfield.

Ian McDonald and Robert Walker were always a threat in a Bute attack which displayed good movement and Jack Hill in the Oban Celtic goal made a couple of good first half saves.

The game’s only goal came on 49 minutes. Robert Walker got the better of his marker and pushed the ball to his right before sending a knee-high shot into the net to make it 1-0.

Oban Celtic had their share of possession and they dominated proceedings during the final 10 minutes of the game.

However with Andy MacDonald and Daniel Madej subdued in attack, they never really tested Kevin Queen in the Bute goal.

Bute again showed they are on the way back to former glories and their next round meeting with GMA will provide another stern test.

Oban Celtic were a shadow of the side which beat Strathglass a week earlier and they really missed Ally McKerracher’s influence at full centre.

Col Glen W/O v Taynuilt

Col Glen were given a walk-over when injury-hit visitors Taynuilt were unable to field a team for their tie at Glendaruel.

Col Glen now have home advantage against Inveraray in the second round.

Marine Harvest Premiership Oban Camanachd 2 Lovat 2

An Andrew MacCuish goal a couple of minutes from time earned Oban Camanachd a well-deserved 2-2 draw against Lovat in their 3pm throw-up at Mossfield.

Oban Camanachd keeper Gavin Stobbart was still out injured so Cameron Sutherland continued in goal. Garry Lord, Aidan MacIntyre and Willie Neilson all returned from injury and started. Scott MacMillan was at centre, flanked by Malcolm Clark and Andrew MacCuish.

Lovat’s Drew Howie was injured so Daniel Grieve went to full back and Craig Mainland returned to the side in defence. Lorne MacKay was also back and started on the bench. Lewis Tawse returned to the side at half forward.

The pitch was in great condition, despite this being the second game of the afternoon.

There were few shots on target during the first half, although Daniel MacVicar forced a good save from Stuart MacDonald.

Lovat manager Fraser Gallacher replaced Chris Johnston with Lorne MacKay at the break.

The second half was only a minute old when Lovat’s Scotland forward Greg Matheson scored with a typical opportunist strike. Lorne MacKay played a disputed free-hit from the left, high towards the back post, and Greg Matheson rolled his marker before hitting a fine back-hand shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Oban Camanachd levelled on 56 minutes when Willie Neilson ran onto a ball up the wing. Neilson played a diagonal ball into the danger area. Craig MacDougall let the ball run and it fell perfectly for Daniel MacVicar who crashed a shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

Lovat regained the lead on the hour mark. A pass was played into the feet of full forward Marc MacLachlan and he knocked the ball to his right where Greg Matheson ran across the penalty spot and, with very little back-lift, smashed a 20-yard shot into the roof of the net before the keeper could even react.

Oban Camanachd manager Ian Hay moved Scott MacMillan, Daniel Cameron and Andrew MacCuish up front for the final 15 minutes of the match. This seemed to disrupt the Lovat defence and the visitors were pinned back as the Oban side went in search of an equaliser.

The Lovat goal had a let-off when Stuart MacDonald saved well from Daniel Cameron following a goalmouth melee. With the Lovat keeper on the ground, the ball rolled along the goal line but, with no Oban forwards close enough to take advantage, the keeper managed to scramble the ball away.

It sometimes got just too crowded in the Lovat goal area but Oban Camanachd conjured up a second equaliser with just two minutes remaining when, following another scramble in the danger area, Andrew MacCuish thumped a shot into the top corner of the net from 10 yards out.

Whilst Lovat will be frustrated to lose a late goal, Oban Camanachd deserved at least a draw from the game.

After the match, Oban Camanachd manager Ian Hay said: ‘I was really pleased with how we played. Lovat have been a bogey team for us and there have been times when we have outplayed them but they have gone on to win the game. When they went 2-1 up I thought ‘not again’ but the boys got stuck in about it and got their reward.

‘We tried to play high up the park to get close to their goal as their keeper Stuart MacDonald is an expert at saving shots from distance. We battled really well and the changes at the end seemed to give us an edge. We could have won the game, but we certainly didn’t deserve to lose as I thought we were the better team. We have a difficult game away to Caberfeidh this Saturday but this result sets us up nicely for that.’

Glenurquhart 0 Kyles Athletic 2

Kyles Athletic got back to winning ways when they beat Glenurquhart 2-0 in their 3pm throw-up at Blairbeg.

Glenurquhart’s David MacLennan returned from suspension and started at full centre with Arran MacDonald and Eddie Tembo making up the rest of the midfield. Fraser Heath was at buckshee back. Michael Fraser was used sparingly at full forward and seemed to be carrying an injury.

Kyles Athletic keeper John Whyte and talisman Roddy MacDonald were both ruled out through injury. Grant Irvine was also missing, whilst Innes MacDonald continued to deputise between the sticks. Kyles switched Thomas Whyte from centre, where he played against Lovat a week earlier, to attack. Gordon Whyte went to centre, with Dunkie Kerr playing at wing centre. Sandy MacKenzie started at wing forward with Scott MacDonald on the other side and Colin MacDonald at full forward.

This contest never really sparked into life.

The opening goal came on 24 minutes. Stuart MacKintosh made an initial save but Thomas Whyte was afforded too much time at the edge of the ‘D’ and, from a central position, had time to wait for the ball to come to him before lashing it into the net.

Colin MacDonald had a glorious chance for the visitors on 62 minutes but was unable to get a shot on goal.

Thomas Whyte got his and Kyles’ second goal on 70 minutes when he struck a back-hand effort from the left of the penalty spot, low past Stuart MacKintosh, beating the keeper on his left side.

Kyles won the midfield battle and this was key. A midfield bustup meant Glenurquhart’s David MacLennan and Kyles’ Dunkie Kerr collected the game’s only yellow cards from referee Graham Cameron.

Andrew King was excellent for Kyles, always pushing forward from his buckshee back position, whilst two-goal Thomas Whyte was always busy.

Ally MacKintosh and Fraser Heath were good for Glenurquhart with keeper Stuart MacKintosh always alert. The win takes Kyles ahead of second-placed Lovat on goal difference.

Marine Harvest National Division Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Inveraray 1

Glasgow Mid Argyll go third in the division after beating Inveraray 2-1 at Yoker.

GMA were at full strength, but Inveraray’s Allan MacDonald remained banned. Lewis Montgomery scored midway through the first half, netting for the second successive Saturday, to give Inveraray the lead.

GMA drew level 10 minutes before the break. Garry Luke played a short corner to Craig Anderson who ran the ball along the by-line, into the ‘D’, before hitting it through the keeper’s legs to make it 1-1.

The winning goal came with just 10 minutes remaining. Mark Bain struck a shot from the penalty spot which triggered a goalmouth scramble and Calum Mclay tapped the ball into the net from close range.

GMA now only trail second placed Kilmallie on goal difference, with both sides just a point behind leaders Oban Celtic.

Marine Harvest North Division 1 Newtonmore 11 Kinlochshiel 0

The Newtonmore seconds were convincing 11-0 winners against the Kinlochshiel seconds in their noon throw-up at The Eilan.

Newtonmore gave game time to Paul MacArthur and Fraser Macintosh and it took some good saves from keeper Graham Kennedy and some tireless defending from Andrew MacKenzie, Fraser Reid, Ross MacMillan and his son Duncan MacMillan to prevent an even bigger winning margin.

Duncan Gorman put Newtomore ahead in the first minute with Calum Stewart making it 2-0 on 18 minutes.

The same combination - Gorman on 29 minutes and Stewart on 34 minutes – made it 4-0.

Paul MacArthur on 39 minutes and a hat-trick goal from Calum Stewart on 43 minutes made it 6-0 at half time.

Cameron McNiven added a seventh a couple of minutes into the second half, before Calum Stewart got his fourth with 59 minutes on the clock.

Paul MacArthur got his second on 70 minutes and two more from Cameron MacNiven on 83 and 89 minutes completed his hat-trick.

Newtonmore already look to be the team to beat in this division, whilst Kinlochshiel, with an average age of 18, or 15 if you exclude veterans Kennedy and MacMillan, will have a more even contest with the Skye Camanachd reserves in the first round of the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup at Kirkton this Saturday.

Fort William 0 Skye Camanachd 0

The Skye Camanachd reserves and the Fort William reserves shared the points after a goal-less draw at An Aird.

Fort William’s David Wright was free of suspension, whilst Skye added youngsters Connor Gilpin and Ruaraidh MacLeod and veteran Allan MacLeod to the

side that beat the Kingussie colts a week earlier.

Both defences were on top during the match.

Skye started against the wind but enjoyed most of the pressure during the opening 15 minutes with Martin Pringle seeing his effort well-saved.

Skye replaced Connor Gilpin with Chris Rose but the Fort William defence was resilient and Skye seemed to run out of ideas and didn’t manage a shot on target during the second half.

Skye lost forward Ross Gordon 10 minutes from time with a wrist injury. Skye may have been frustrated not to make their pressure count, but it could have been worse as had it not been for two terrific saves from keeper Ryan Morrison during the final couple of minutes, Fort William could have taken both points.

Glenurquhart 2 Glengarry 3

Glengarry edged out the Glenurquhart reserves 3-2 in their noon throw-up at Blairbeg.

Christopher Mack gave Glenurquhart the lead after 18 minutes, only for Nick Dalgety to level six minutes later.

Glengarry went in front through John MacKinnon on 31 minutes but Jed Stoddart made it 2-2 three minutes into the second half.

Glenurquhart, with first team manager Iain MacLeod at half forward, suffered a blow on 75 minutes when full back Paul MacKintosh hurt his knee and had to be withdrawn. Duncan Fraser, who had come off earlier with a back problem, came back on in MacKintosh’s place.

The winning goal came with 12 minutes remaining. Glenurquhart keeper Jay Brady had made an amazing save, keeping a deflected, low shot out with his stick, but Steven Cameron had pushed forward from midfield and, from the edge of the ‘D’, pushed the ball home to make it 3-2.

Kingussie 2 Aberdeen University 1

The Kingussie colts came from behind to beat Aberdeen University 2-1 at The Dell.

Stuart Cameron scored after just 10 minutes to give the students a 1-0 lead which they took into the break. The game turned on two expert pieces of Kevin Thain finishing within a three minute second half spell. Thain equalised on 58 minutes and got his second on the hour to win the match for Kingussie.

Inveraray 0 Ballachulish 6

Ballachulish scored three times in each half to beat the Inveraray seconds 6-0 at The Winterton.

Ballachulish were without Connor MacGregor who received a two-match ban for his red card against Col Glen a week earlier.

Inveraray had a bit more experience this week, with veterans John Smylie at the back and David Robertson up front.

With Lorne Brown and Morgan Smith in charge of first team affairs at Ballachulish, their side got off to a tremendous start, taking the lead after just 12 seconds. Inveraray won the ball from the throw-up and pushed it forward into the Ballachulish half.

The ball was cleared to Alan Clark who turned and struck a shot past Inveraray keeper Graham MacPherson to make it 1-0. The goal set the tone for the game.

Alan Clark got his and Ballachulish’s second on 10 minutes with a similar goal to his opener. The ball found its way forward to Clark who again turned and rifled a shot into the net.

The home side extended their lead on 34 minutes and it was a hat-trick goal for Alan Clark that did the damage.

Ally Banks cleared the ball upfield to forward Craig McLaughlan who played a pass to Alan Clark. He held the ball up, then moved it forward to Daniel MacLean whose shot was saved by keeper MacPherson but Clark followed up to make it 3-0 at half time.

Ballachulish continued to attack in the second half, looking to add to their interval total.

Lorne Brown added a fourth three minutes into the second half. Duncan MacDonald saw his shot saved by Graham MacPherson but Brown pushed the re-bound home.

Lorne Brown got his second on 55 minutes. Daniel MacLean played in a corner and the Inveraray defence were only able to clear the ball as far as Connor MacKenzie who calmly slotted a through-ball to Lorne Brown who pinged a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Inveraray changed their goalkeeper, with youngster Gregor Mather replacing Graham MacPherson. Mather made two outstanding saves, denying Duncan MacDonald on both occasions.

A sixth goal arrived with 20 minutes remaining when Duncan MacDonald struck a peach of a shot high into the net past the helpless keeper to make it 6-0.

This was a great result for Ballachulish’s young team. They were quicker all over the park and more clinical in front of goal. Ally Banks was superb in defence against David Robertson, not giving his more experienced opponent an inch. Duncan MacDonald was outstanding in midfield as he has been all season.

Inveraray are still blooding a young side and they were given a lesson in South 1 shinty by their hosts. Whenever they broke forward, they found Donald Wilson in the Ballachulish goal equal to their efforts.

Kilmory P Kyles Athletic P

The Kyles Athletic second team and Kilmory were scheduled to meet at Tighnabruaich but the match was reversed to Kilmory’s MacRae Park because of an unplayable pitch.

MacRae Park was then ruled unplayable, so the match was postponed.

Marine Harvest North Division 2 Kilmallie 0 Caberfeidh 2

The Caberfeidh second team stay top of the division following their 2-0 victory over the Kilmallie second team at Canal Parks.

Caberfeidh, with Neil MacKenzie back in their side, gave starts to Kyle Grant, 13, and Fraser MacDonald, 14.

The hosts created some early chances but it was Kilmallie who almost took the lead when a great strike came back off keeper Ian McColl’s right post.

Caberfeidh went in front on 23 minutes when Ruairidh MacLeman, who started in defence before being pushed forward to full centre, surged forward before blasting a 25-yard drive into the net.

Paddy Wilson made it 2-0 with just a couple of first half minutes remaining, slotting home a rebound after the keeper had saved.

The pattern of play continued mainly towards the Kilmallie goal after the break and the visitors’ cause wasn’t helped when they had Stuart Ross sent off by referee Ronnie Campbell.

Some good goal-keeping prevented Caberfeidh from adding to their tally, particularly one superb stop from a Stewart Krzyzanowski shot which seemed destined for the top corner.

Lochaber 2 Lochcarron 2

The Lochaber colts scored twice in the last 15 minutes to draw 2-2 with Lochcarron at Spean Bridge.

Liam Arnott gave Lochcarron the lead after five minutes, whilst Sean MacCuish made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half.

Lachlan Campbell started the Lochaber comeback 15 minutes from time and Ben Delaney made it 2-2 on the stroke of full time.

Lovat 4 Beauly 0

Lovat came out on top in their reserve team derby against Beauly at Balgate.

Raymond Rennie gave Lovat the lead on 31 minutes with the only goal of the first half.

Lovat had keeper Ronan MacMillan to thank for two incredible saves which kept the hosts ahead at the break. First he got his hand to a deflected Elliot Moir shot to his right, turning the ball away to safety.

MacMillan then used his stick to parry a Euan McCormick drive just a couple of minutes later to ensure Lovat stayed ahead going into half-time.

Lovat netted three more times during the final 15 minutes to put gloss on the win.

Graeme MacMillan, back in the side, made it 2-0 with 75 minutes played.

Raymond Rennie got his second on 78 minutes, whilst James Whyte made it 4-0 with five minutes remaining.

Strathglass 0 Lewis Camanachd 4

Lewis Camanachd recorded their first league win of the season, beating the Strathglass colts 4-0 in their 1.15pm throw-up at Cannich.

Lewis were dealt a blow early on when full back Daniel Gallagher had to come off with what turned out to be a broken hand.

Paul Duke broke the deadlock following a fine passing move on the half hour mark. Full centre Ally Lamont won the ball, launching it forward to Donald Lamont at half forward. Lamont spread the ball wide to Peter Gomez who found Paul Duke and he rounded the goalie to make it 1-0.

Peter Gomez added a second a minute before the break from a corner. The ball broke at the edge of the ‘D’ and Gomez drilled it low into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Donald Lamont made it 3-0 on 62 minutes, with the damage again coming from a corner which Scott MacLeod played short to Peter Gomez who flicked the ball on to Donald Lamont who beat his marker before striking the ball across the goalie into the far corner of the goal.

Paul Duke got his second with 16 minutes remaining. A long Scott MacLeod shy bounced up into Paul Duke’s path and he smashed the ball on the half volley from 15 yards out, with his effort rising into the top corner of the net.

It was an historic day for Lewis Camanachd as this was the islanders’ biggest winning margin and their first win on the mainland since 2015.

Inverness v Boleskine W/O

The match between the Inverness reserves and Boleskine at The Bught Park would have seen the visitors feature a number of former Inverness players.

However a series of call-offs coupled with an understrength first team meant the Inverness seconds were unable to field team so they forfeit the match.

Marine Harvest South Division 2 Bute P

Strachur P

Strachur’s meeting with Bute at The Meadows was postponed.

Oban Celtic P Aberdour P

The noon throw-up between the Oban Celtic second team and the Aberdour second team will be rescheduled.

Aberdour P Skye Camanachd P

Aberdour’s re-arranged league fixture against Skye Camanachd was postponed for the second time as Silversands was unplayable.

Marine Harvest North Division 2 Strathglass 3 Lochaber 3

The Lochaber second team came from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Strathglass in their 1pm throw-up at Cannich.

Freya Strachan scored twice for Strathglass, with Mathilde Jones getting the other.

However a Natalie MacDonald brace and a Caitlin MacDonald goal earned the Spean Bridge side a draw.

Kinlochshiel 2 Glengarry 11

Glengarry were too strong for new club Kinlochshiel, winning 11-2 at Kirkton.

This was Kinlochshiel’s first competitive home match and Alaona MacLennan and Eilidh MacInnes got their goals.

However Elaine Cameron netted four times, Emily Gordon and Leona Falconer grabbed hat-tricks, whilst Joanne Gillanders got the other to give Glengarry victory.

Lovat 10 Inverness 0

Lovat proved too hot to handle as they beat Inverness 10-0 in their 2pm throw-up at Balgate.

The game was completely dominated by Lovat.

Laura Gallacher at full centre distributed the ball brilliantly from the start, constantly finding Fiona Urquhart in the full forward position.

Fiona Urquhart was a constant threat, showcasing incredible ariel ball control, strong dribbling and great spacial awareness and by the time Lovat head coach James Gallacher took her off with 10 first half minutes to go, she had scored seven times to leave Lovat 7-0 to the good.

Inverness put regular keeper Caitlin Mutch back into goal from the start of the second half to try and stem the onslaught and, to an extent, this worked as she pulled off several great saves.

But Lovat always looked dangerous coming forward and Paige MacDonald made it 8-0 shortly into the second half.

Laura Gallacher was relentless in her attacking runs and should have added several goals to the tally. She was finally rewarded on 55 minutes when her shot from the left took the slightest deflection to beat the Inverness keeper.

Despite being 9-0 behind, the Inverness girls kept battling and got a shot on target around the hour mark but it was easily dealt with by Lovat keeper Tina Marshall and then cleared up the park by Holli Gravil.

Fiona Urquhart completed the scoring with her eighth goal of the game a couple of minutes later to make it 10-0 in what was a very one sided affair.

Skye Camanachd 2 Glenurquhart 7

Glenurquhart were 7-2 winners against Skye Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.

Abby MacLean got both Skye goals with Donna MacKenzie, Hazel Hunter, and Shauna Aris amongst the Glenurquhart scorers.

Marine Harvest South Division 2 Dunadd 3 Ardnamurchan 3

Dunadd and the Ardnamurchan second team drew 3-3 in their 12.30pm throw-up at the Lochgilphead astro pitch.

Carla Todd gave Dunadd the lead on 17 minutes, but Hannah MacDonald levelled a couple of minutes later. Grace Drummond put the hosts back in front on 39 but Ardnamurchan again fought back with Rebekah Connolly making it 2-2 on 44 minutes.

Iona Cameron put Ardnamurchan in front for the first time a minute later, but Grace Drummond got her second on 66 minutes to make it 3-3.

Ardnamurchan had their goalie to thank for some great saves.

Tayforth 1 Oban Lorn 0

Tayforth edged out Oban Lorn 1-0 at Musselburgh.
