Highland Haggis Festival kicks off in Spean Bridge

-

THE ONLY festival in Scotland that celebrates the national dish kicks off in Lochaber this weekend.

The Highland Haggis Festival is being held at Spean Bridge with a number of ‘haggis hunts’ being held in honour of the country’s famous national dish.

This year the organisers, with the help of the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, will be launching two new permanent haggis trails around Spean Bridge, which will be officially opened on Saturday April 7, followed by a day of events at Spean Bridge Village Hall on Sunday.

The trails are designed to promote Scottish culture and family fun by getting people out exploring the area.

The first is a 60-minute (4km) trail exploring the village and local woodland and the other a 90-minute (6.5km) trail incorporating the popular Highbridge Path.

Both walks start at the community garden, outside the Spar shop in Spean Bridge.

To celebrate this year’s Highland Haggis Festival and the launch of the trail, maps will be available free of charge to those walking the route at its launch at 2pm on Saturday April 7 in the Spean Bridge community garden. A limited quantity of complimentary maps will also be available at the festival on Sunday April 8 at Spean Bridge Village Hall.

A festival spokesperson said: ‘We are really excited about the new walking trails which explore the area around Spean Bridge. The Highland Haggis Festival committee decided to develop the haggis hunt into a permanent fixture.’

The committee thanks the owners of Killiechonate and the Highbridge Path Committee for allowing them to place posts on their land.
