Get out and enjoy the extra hours of daylight
NOW THAT mornings and evenings are brighter, it seems possible to cram much more into each day.
I often hear people commenting ‘it’s 9 o’clock and still daylight’ with delight in their voices and I have been known to say it myself.
After a long dark winter, the extra hours of daylight are so welcome. It also made a recent train journey to Glasgow so much better as I was able to see the countryside I was travelling through and it was amazing.
I’m a creature of habit and usually sit on the same side of the train each time but this time I didn’t and what a difference it made. I’ve taken this journey so many times over the years and not paid attention to so much of it. It really is a spectacular trip and on a train full of people who perhaps hadn’t been on it before it was lovely to see their expressions as they saw the snow-capped mountains and lochs.
Seeing it through someone else’s eyes makes you appreciate it all the more and we were lucky enough to have a guard who pointed out some of the sights for everyone.
It’s not just the train journey to Oban that is spectacular. However you choose to travel, each method has its own highlights. The bus and car journey have their own delights and nothing beats turning the corner at the top of the Bealach an Righ and seeing Oban before you. I know I just sigh and think ‘home’.
Perhaps one of the best though is sailing into Oban Bay, even when I’ve just been to Mull for the day. It just gladdens your heart to see the town nestled in the hills and crowned by McCaig’s Tower. So my suggestion is, get out there, take a boat trip for the day or afternoon or take the train to Taynuilt or Lochawe for a wee walk and lunch before you get the next one back.
We often don’t appreciate what we have round us when we see it all the time, but pretend you’ve not been here before and you’ll see it in a whole new light.
