Oban features in new history series on TV
FASCINATING stories from across Scotland, including Oban, will feature in a new series of STV’s The People’s History Show, which returns Monday April 16 at 8pm.
The popular show kicks off with a must-see episode for Beatles fans, telling the story of the local promoter who coined the phrase ‘Beatlemania’ when the Fab Four played Caird Hall in Dundee in 1963, and featuring seldom-seen Beatles footage from the STV archive.
Fronted by STV viewers’ favourite Angus Simpson and returning host Sarah Mack, and with David Farrell bringing features from across the country, The People’s History Show looks back in time to discover the places and people that make up Scotland’s shared history.
The new episodes explore a host of fascinating events, places and personalities from Scotland’s past, including a look at McCaig’s Tower in Oban, one of the country’s most unusual buildings; the story of worldfamous transatlantic liner the Queen Elizabeth 2, which was built and launched in Clydebank in 1967; and a chance to learn more about Aberdeen writer and poet Nan Shepherd, whose picture can be seen on Scottish £5 notes.
The series pays tribute to iconic Edinburgh author Muriel Spark to mark the 100th anniversary of her birth and looks back at Muhammad Ali’s visit to Paisley in 1965, when the heavyweight champion was still known as Cassius Clay.
In a special episode, STV celebrates Glasgow’s iconic Citizens’ Theatre, which in its 70 years has established itself at the heart of the local community.
As ‘the Citz’ prepares for a major redevelopment project, Angus Simpson looks at the impact of this much loved and unique theatre.
