Big win for Mallaig in league debut
MALLAIG Football Club started life in the Skye and Lochalsh AFA league in spectacular fashion on Saturday with an emphatic 11-2 victory over Kyle.
The Lochaber-based side sit top of the William Wilson League after the first match of this their inaugural season in the league after securing a double-figure victory the Lochalsh side.
Mallaig FC were admitted to the Skye and Lochalsh AFA league following a ballot held at the association AGM in February after a push to secure the future of a football team in the village.
And the team could not have opened the season in a more convincing manner.
After a somewhat indifferent pre-season, the Mallaig forwards certainly had their shooting boots with them on Saturday and made light work of a Kyle team that played well in patches but failed make any real impact on the match.
In a man of the match performance, Andy Cunningham was the standout player for the Lochaber outfit, as not only did he score a hat-trick but was a thorn in the side of the Kyle defence all afternoon.
There were plenty of positive performances in the Mallaig midfield and forward line, with stand outs being Aaron Milligan, Jaimie Young, Ross Douglas and Angus MacNaughton.
Speaking to the Lochaber Times about the club’s new venture into the Skye and Lochalsh league, manager Jamie MacGregor said: ‘It’s positive for the club. It’s been a long year without competitive football so the lads are desperate to get back out and playing.’
