We asked on Facebook if the problem of discarded chewing gum and cigarette end is becoming worse in Oban town centre.

Fergie McIver: ‘Yes, Definately ! Why are there 7 bins on the seaward side of George street between Stafford St and Stevenson st and not one on the other side? Why are there no ‘ashtrays’ attached to bins as there are elsewhere and why are litter dropping fines not enforced ?

‘Walk down George St on a Sunday morning and you’ll see all the evidence of cigarette ends, chewing gum and fast food wrappers on the pavements.’ Andy MacArthur: ‘In the absence of any evidence it’s difficult to quantify if it’s any worse. It is, however, still an abdication of personal responsibility so indicative of the the times in which we live. It’s always someone else job or problem.’

John Mactavish: ‘True, but it was just as bad when we were kids in the ‘70’s. Chewing gum and litter have always been a big problem in this area and it’s not just the tourists who are responsible.’

Colin Martin: ‘Think we are missing the motorised street sweepers, not seen one for a while.

‘Can’t fault the litter pickers they do a great job.’

Paul Bailey: ‘In a word yes, it’s disgusting all over the new paving and walkways.’

John Michael Gallacher: ‘I’ve noticed it more on the shop side of George Street, absolutely horrible on the new pavements.’

Mairi MacDonald: ‘I’m not down the street much but I noticed there was a lot of fag ends outside the hospital the other day.’
