TAYNUILT’S Harry Mobey, who will be leaving school in the summer, has been training to meet the standards of the senior badminton league.

The 17-year-old competed recently in the Bath University senior men’s singles tournament. As the youngest competitor out of 71 players, his main aim was to gain experience but he ended up winning the event.

Harry’s crunch game came in the semi-finals where he faced a three-set match against England’s Liam Bridge, one of the top seeds. With the match standing at one set apiece, Harry was 10-7 down in the third and final set.

Harry said: ‘I had to give myself a good talking to. I knew I could secure a place in the final so I just went for it, came into the second half of the match with an attack and increased the speed of the game in order to win successive points and break down my opponent.

‘I went on to win the set 21-10 and secure a place in the final.’

Harry went on to win the final in a two-set victory, beating England’s Timothy Scott 21-17, 21-9.

Harry then took part in another senior tournament in Cumbria on Saturday, which he also won with a three-set win over James Robertson, placing him in the top 15 of the Scottish senior rankings table and enabling him to maintain elite performance as he officially enters the university league in September.
