McDade secures points win in Glasgow
LOCHABER Phoenix Boxing Club continued their build up to their next home show, at the Nevis Centre on Saturday April 28, when the club’s senior light heavyweight Nathan McDade travelled to Glasgow last weekend to take part in a contest against the host club, Barn BC’s John Anderson.
McDade was looking to build on the improvements he has made this season against tall southpaw Anderson but started the opening round fairly tentatively. As both boxers vied for control of the centre of the ring, they were both wary of the other’s power and neither made a real stab at dominating the session. Both threw only single punches, the majority of which were out of range and thus resulted in a stalemate.
McDade, on unfamiliar territory and in front of a hostile crowd, really stepped up his game in the second round and boxed far more purposefully, almost immediately snapping back Anderson’s head with a straight right, a punch which he would land with much more frequency as the bout progressed. Buoyed by this success, McDade became far more aggressive and, while still only boxing in single phase attacks, clearly clinched the round.
Now in a rhythm of sorts, Nathan proceeded to force the action in the final round and, as the accumulation of shots landed, the Barn boxer began to have an effect on his reserves of stamina, the Lochaber boxer became more dominant and indeed with a little more poise McDade could have been looking to the referee to issue a count on his opponent as he began to wilt from the strong single shots landed.
On reflection, this was a great learning contest for Nathan and a good points win.
The boxing club is looking forward to the evening of Saturday April 28 at the Nevis Centre when he and his team-mates will face boxers from all over Scotland. Tickets are available from the venue or any of the coaching staff or boxers of the club.
