Oban Sportive takes place this weekend

HUNDREDS of cyclists are gearing up to take part in this year’s Oban Sportive, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday.

The sixth annual event is on track to host 200 riders, who will take one of the two marshalled routes.

Mark Beaumont, who broke the world record by cycling round the world in 80 days, will also be riding in this year’s sportive.

The record-holder will also give a talk on Saturday night to fellow competitor­s in the Argyllshir­e Gathering halls about his adventures.

And, for the first time, people will have the option of tackling the Ben Cruachan Hill Climb, which starts on 3pm on Saturday at the Ben Cruachan Inn.

Speaking about preparatio­n for this year’s event, organiser Steven Groom said: ‘It’s going really well. Hopefully, it’s a nice day. We are hoping to have around 200 entrants on the day, and we are on target. The hill climb and Mark Beaumont talk are both free for entrants.

‘We are very grateful to all of our sponsors.’

Steven cycled round Oban this week collecting sponsorshi­p money from local businesses.

Sponsoring this year’s event, which is run by the North Argyll Cycle Club and Rotary Club of Oban, is Diageo, Aggregate Industries, BID4Oban, Ben Cruachan Inn, Dawnfresh, Wild About Argyll, Oban Cycles, Oban Fish and Chips, Rusty Cycle Shed and MacQueen Bros.
