Big Bang comes to Lochaber High
WEST Highland College UHI and Energy Skills Partnership hosted the Big Bang @ School event at Lochaber High last week as pupils were given an insight into career opportunities in science and technology.
The Big Bang event provided S1 and S2 pupils with a chance to better understand the world of science and engineering, and what a future career may look like in those fields.
Teams from the college held activity sessions based on paper chromatography, electrical circuit games, molecular gastronomy and the impact of exercise on the body.
They were also given robotics and virtual reality demonstrations, including a VR experience of maintaining an offshore wind turbine.
Adam Robertson, head of curriculum at West Highland College UHI, explained that since the UK needs more scientists and engineers, skills in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM subjects) are ‘key’ to the employability of youngsters in the future.
He said: ‘We’re delighted to have been working with ESP, EngineeringUK and our colleagues in Lochaber High School to deliver such an important event.’
Among the exhibitors attending the event in Lochaber High School were BSW Timber, CITB, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Merchant Navy Training Board, Aggregate Industries, BAM Nuttall, Skills Development Scotland, ESP (Energy Skills Partnership), Institute of Civil Engineering, University of Strathclyde and the University of the Highlands and Islands.
