Dramatic comeback earns Mallaig three points

Mallaig 4 Gairloch 3 William Wilson League

MALLAIG took all three points in their league match against Gairloch on Saturday at Plockton in what was a hardfought affair from start to finish.

The Lochaber side made a dream start when they took the lead with Marc Mclean assisting Gordie Jamieson, who provided and excellent volley finish.

After this good work Mallaig were pegged back when Archie Gilles handled in the box to give Gairloch a way back into the game.

Mallaig were able to take a goal lead into the break when some good work down the right again saw Ross Douglas have a shot well saved by the Gairloch keeper only to have Jamie MacGregor finish with the left from 18 yards.

In the second half, Gairloch levelled early on before taking the lead after a slight defensive error. Another goal from a corner put them ahead and it was hard to see a way back for a deflated Mallaig side.

Mallaig changed after an hour to bring Brett McMillan off the bench, which proved to be the turning point. With less than five minutes to go, Brett followed up a saved shot to head the ball against the bar and then back off him to put it over the line to make it 3-3.

Mallaig really went on the offensive in the closing stages and it was Andy Cunningham who popped up with the winner deep into injury time. McMillan crossed into the box where Cunningham met it with a sweet half-volley into the bottom corner from inside the box.

Mallaig will now take part in a quarter-final away to Portree this Saturday.
