Oban Rotary ends its school year on a high
OBAN Rotary, under the leadership of president Tommy McQuade, ended its 2017/18 youth programme on a high with the Young Speakers competition last Wednesday evening at the Perle Hotel.
This involves primary six and seven pupils speaking on a topical subject of their choice for three to four minutes.
The event goes from strength to strength with each individual presentation in the outstanding category.
Members of Oban Speakers Club were the adjudicators for the competition.
The winner, who was outstanding, was Bobbie Stewart from Lochnell, with Caitlin MacKay from Taynuilt and Alex Elliot from Rockfield second and third respectively. The three winners received monetary prizes with all participants getting a certificate of participation signed by president Tommy.
Anne MacFarlane-Barrow and Raluca Bajko were the winners of Oban Rotary’s Young Writers’ competition at junior and intermediate level respectively. Both Anne and Raluca attend Dalmally Primary.
Aisling Duncan, Katherine MacDonald, Ruby McDougall and Lauren Robinson, all from Taynuilt Primary, competed in Oban Rotary’s Young Photographer of the Year competition.
All four were commended but Ruby and Katherine were the winners of the junior and intermediate levels respectively. Also in both pictures is Dave Waltho, Oban Rotary’s Youth Convener and a retired teacher from Oban High School.
Remaining available from Oban Rotary’s 2017/18 youth programme is the club’s award to pupils at primary who have achieved something special in the past academic year at their school. There could be multiple winners.
All this is in addition to Oban Rotary’s financial support for primary school camps, further education abroad, visits to war sites, American exchange students, youth sports and the club encourages approaches from any and all youth-orientated bodies for support with their activities.
