Kyokushinkai Karate

The Kyokushinkai grading tests are being held over the weekend of June 16/17. Saturday tests will be held in Oban at the Oban Martial Arts Centre and on Sunday will be held at the Mid Argyll Sports Centre in Lochgilphead; both tests start at 11am prompt. For anyone thinking of learning karate the best time to start is immediately after the grading tests as the emphasis after the tests is on new techniques. Kyokushinkai karate can make a person mentally and physically the strongest they can be so why not give it a go? The Oban class is at 6pm on Thursdays for primary school ages over eight and 7pm for high school ages and adults. It is never too late to take up Kyokushinkai karate.

Kickboxing

Club coach Wullie Rodger says: ‘Beginners are always welcome at Senshi Do Kick Boxing. If you are after the cardio and strength training without the fighting then Monday’s Kick Fit session at 6pm is the one for you. Wednesdays have the junior – 5-14 years – session at 4.30pm then the seniors – 15 and over – at 6pm. These sessions cover the technical and tactical sides of K1-style kick boxing as well as cardio and strength training required to get you fighting fit. Fridays have another junior session at 4.30pm until 6pm. Sundays have the women-only session at 10am and junior fight club at 11am. As you see there’s something for everyone so the only thing stopping you is you. Remember don’t put off starting until you ‘get fit enough’ because you get fit by doing it.’

Find the club on Facebook (Senshi Do Kickboxing) or contact Wullie Rodger on shihanwill@gmail.com or 07480 273190.

BJJ

Oban BJJ had a visitor from Ontario Canada on Monday – Claudio de Lisi, a purple belt from established gym ‘Brazilian Top Team Canada’. Claudio taught a deep half guard class and kimura set up – the reverse ude-garami arm lock is commonly called the Kimura after Japanese Judoka Masahiko Kimura, who used the technique to great effect. Claudio took his time to show the students the small details which help make the submissions work more effectively and quickly.

MMA Thursdays are starting to pick up momentum .The class is broken down into sections from stand-up fighting to wrestling to finishing on the ground. It is kept basic so is perfect for anyone wanting to start MMA.

Wadokai Karate

Dunbeg School, 6.30pm on Tuesday evenings. The club is currently working towards a grading on June 19 at 6.30pm. Registration starts at 6.15pm.

If you are keen to know more please contact chief instructor Christopher Bruce, using the details below. It can also be arranged to go along and watch the grading to see anyone would like to try this style of karate.

Park Primary section of the club is currently practising simple defence and attack drills using focus pads and soft sparring mitts.

The children have to get around an obstacle course that is made up of the other karate students who have pads or gloves or soft foam tubes with which they make an attack.

The person completing the course – against the clock – has to defend themselves and counter the attack with one of the techniques and move on until they have got past all the attackers successfully. Great fun.
