Inverlochy and Beauly take top spots in Fraser MacPhee tournament

-

More than 100 youngsters took part in the Fraser MacPhee Shinty Tournament on Sunday as teams from across the Highlands took to the sun-soaked An Aird field.

Primary shinty teams from as far and wide as Beauly, Kingussie, Aberdour and Inveraray travelled to Fort William for a bumper day of shinty action which saw P5 and P7 teams in competition.

Inverlochy Primary School continued their dominance of primary school shinty as the P7s took top spot in their tournament, beating Oban’s Park Primary School.

There was a shock result in the P5 final when Beauly Primary School beat Inverlochy to win the tournament.

As well as the team competitions, there were some individual prizes to be handed out as Beauly’s Liam MacLean and Park’s Calum MacMillan won player of the tournament for the P5 and P7 competitions respectively.

Players also had the opportunity to test their power in the speed hitting contest where Inverlochy duo Diesel MacLean and Jack Kearney recorded the fastest strikes in the P5 and P7 categories.

The tournament, organised every year by the MacPhee family, is played in memory of the late Fort William Shinty Club youth player Fraser MacPhee and the family were once again delighted with the turn out.

Catriona MacPhee said: ‘We had a great day in the sunshine at An Aird today with teams from as far and wide as Beauly, Kingussie, Aberdour and Inveraray. It’s a great testament to the parents and coaches that more than 100 youngsters were able to take part in a fantastic day of sport, so a big thank you from the organisers.

‘Thanks also to the Camanachd Association for donating an international strip for the raffle, and thanks to all the volunteers who make the tournament happen every year.’

More than £530 was raised between the snack bar and raffle ticket sales, which will be donated to support disability shinty.
