The Oban Times

Mathesons Furnishings

-

A Mathesons van delivering furniture in towns, to the remotest homes or via a ferry is an everyday sight in the West Highlands and islands.

The business started ‘decades ago,’ said Neil Matheson, who runs the business with his brother DM at Tweedmill, Soroba Road, Oban.

It was started by his uncle Ian in Fort William with Neil and DM’s father Murdo Ian and all their cousins working there as well.

‘They had us kids doing everything – you name it,’ said Neil. He studied furniture design and manufacture at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, historically the chair-making capital of the world. Neil’s skills help inform all the buying decisions and this, linked with an independent shops’ purchasing group, enables Mathesons to offer a wide range at competitive prices.

The firm has grown to include commercial and domestic – they have equipped homes, hotels, and even boats. They also have office furniture, curtains and blinds, a wide range or floorings and beds and an expert installation team. A large stock means quick delivery or same day collection.

‘Our area roughly matches that of The Oban Times; we are a family-run business delivering a quality service to a local area. The Oban Times reaches our customers well,’ said Neil.

‘I know a lot of people prefer the compact size. The Oban Times covers the area and does it well, and I am sure it will continue to do so.’
