The Oban Times

Artist Q&A:

Gunna Sound

-

Q: How did you start as a band?

Johnny Scoular, guitar whistles and vocals and Campbell Brown, accordion and vocals, and we first played together in the early eighties in Glasgow, initially doing gigs for the Ossianic Society of Glasgow University. Over the years we have played extensively throughout Scotland, particularly around Glasgow and our native West Coast. For larger functions we’re augmented by friends who also played on our two albums, Rollin on the Sea and Land of Dreams.

Q: What and who are your musical influences?

We were both brought up on Scottish and Country / Americana music. Being able to go and hear live the likes of the Wallochmor Ceilidh Band, The Corries, John Carmichael, Gaberlunzie, Don Williams etc shaped our musical tastes. We listen to all types of music on the road and never fall out over choice, its an eclectic mix!

Q: What are you looking forward to most about the Fringe Festival?

Oban is one of our favourite places; the Fringe is laid back so people can just wander in and out and stay for as long as they want. Also seeing younger people involved, the emergence over the years of young bands, particularly from Tiree, has been fantastic to see and hear and we hope that we have played a small part in keeping that tradition going. We take pride that we are now playing at weddings and parties for the children of parents we first played for! We are delighted to be involved with Sons of Argyll at Oban Live.
