Western Isles has first Lego club
This summer will see the launch of the first Library Lego Club in the Western Isles, thanks to a donation of Lego bricks and parts from the Western Isles Lifestyle Lottery.
The Lego club will take place in The Space, the new MakerSpace area in Stornoway Library. The space has been created with the help of Scottish Government Public Library Improvement Fund and plans to offer a range of digital and creative opportunities for the community – as well as Lego.
Kathleen Milne, libraries manager, said: ‘We always wanted Lego to be an important part of the space as it is such a fantastic creative and learning activity for all ages. However, we weren’t sure if we actually had enough Lego to support a regular club.
‘Thanks to the generous donation of additional Lego by the Western Isles Lifestyle Lottery, we now have enough to launch a Library Lego Club over the summer holidays.’
The growth of the Lego club will depend on the success of this summer’s trial period which could potentially see the club expanding to other areas of the Western Isles.
Janet Paterson, founder of the Western Isles Lifestyle Lottery, added: ‘The lottery team grasped the opportunity to purchase a large quantity of Lego with the vision of supporting the popular Lego club concept already available in mainland communities.
‘The new library space was the perfect central location and we are delighted to have worked alongside the library team to very quickly make this a reality in time for the summer holiday period.’
The Library Lego Club will be running over the summer along with some Code Club taster sessions, as well as the opportunity to experience a virtual reality moon landing.
All the events are free but booking is recommended.
