Broadcasting duo set sail for Oban

John Sergeant of Strictly fame and newsreader Michael Buerk are heading for Oban – by boat.

The pair are expected to berth at the town’s North Pier pontoons some time this month in a 60ft yacht with a Channel 5 film crew in tow.

The celebrity voyagers are touring Britain’s coastline as part of a new travel series they are making. Showmakers got in touch with Bid4Oban, which is organising a yellow badge tour of the town for the VIPs as well as a trip to the distillery and hopefully a performance by Oban High School Pipe band.

Bid4Oban’s chief executive Andrew Spence said: ‘I think it’s Michael Buerk who is the seasoned sailor of the two. He has a boat in the Med somewhere. If John’s antics on Strictly’s dance floor are anything to go by, I’m sure he’ll be very entertaining on deck too!’

Programme makers have also been offered the use of new drone footage taken of the pontoons for a promotional video, backed by Argyll and Bute Council.

TV viewers most recently saw newsreader Michael Buerk on BBC One presenting a food-show called Royal Recipes. In 2014 he was a contestant on I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

John Sergeant has appeared on television programmes including Have I Got News for You following his stint on Strictly where, despite repeatedly finishing bottom of the score board after the judges’ votes, the public consistently voted to keep him in the competition. He is currently a reporter for The One Show.

The journalist does have some boat experience though. In 2015, he made an ITV show called Barging Round Britain, exploring the history of the nation’s canals and waterways.
