Hoping for rain as duck race looms
We have lots to look forward to this weekend starting this evening (Thursday July 19) with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in St John’s Cathedral at 7.30pm.
The acoustics are fantastic and the cathedral itself is fascinating. Did you know that it still has things on the wall that held glass for testing the impact of Concord as it flew over Oban?
Sorry, since I completed my training for Oban walking tours, I’ve been a bit of an anorak and I keep imparting wee nuggets of information that I’ve learned, whether people want to hear them or not.
Next on the agenda for an enjoyable weekend is an open day for Oban and Lorn Riding for the Disabled at Achnalarig Stables, passed Glencruitten, on Friday from 11am.
It sounds like a fantastic day out for children and adults alike with all sorts of fun stuff going on, and it is a fantastic charity to support.
On Saturday the annual Rotary Club duck race is on, and I must admit I love it. Hopefully, we’ll get a wee bit more rain to have some water in the burn for the ducks, although seeing them getting stuck on rocks is entertaining too.
The launch into the Black Lynn at 3pm is my favourite part of the event. I’ve taken some great photos over the years and hopefully this year I’ll get a few more.
Which brings me nicely onto my last event – the Oban Photographic Club Exhibition, which is from July 22 to August 4, giving you plenty of time to make your way into Waterstone’s.
I’m always impressed by the skill of all our local photographers and the variety of images they make interesting, so do try to visit the exhibition, you will enjoy it.
The other venue for all our talented local photographers is Facebook. It is a great way for people to show their work and reach a wide audience and it is one of the things I look at most and share if I’m able.
I’m not the most technically adept and it still amazes me that photos posted in Oban can be seen worldwide, meaning everyone can appreciate how beautiful Oban and
Argyll are.
The photograph last week was of a tree stump in the grounds of The Rockfield Centre, which was quite hard as it is hidden round the back, so we’ll have an easier one this week. Well, I think it’s easy!
