Many people view food waste as environmentally harmless because it is biodegradable, without realising how dangerous it can be if taken to landfill.
Every year more than 380,000 tonnes of food is thrown away in Scotland. It is estimated that dealing with this waste costs the Scottish public more than £1 billion every year.
When waste is sent to landfill, air does not get to the organic waste. As this organic waste breaks down, it creates methane which is a greenhouse gas 34 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
When this same waste is composted at home, oxygen helps the waste to decompose aerobically which means hardly any methane is produced, which is good news for the planet. And furthermore, after 12 months, you get a free fertiliser for your garden to grow more food and repeat the cycle.
Lochaber Environmental Group will be attending the Lochaber Vegan and Ethical Fair in Duncansburgh Hall, Fort William, this Saturday, July 21, from 11am until 4pm. If anyone would like some to sign up for a free compost bin and take home some free vegetable plants to get them started, then come along and say hello.
Why not take your bike to the fair? Come along to the Dr Bike stall outside and get a free health check of your bike from the community bike interns Hannah and Liam.
Lochaber Environmental Group’s Go, Grow and Glow project is funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund.
