MacNab wins at Tarbert

The final two rounds of the club championsh­ip took place in contrastin­g weather conditions:

Iain Macalister started the day one shot ahead of John MacNab, however, this changed during the first nine with John taking a six-shot lead at the turn.

Iain battled back and his one over par 34 saw the deficit reduce to three shots with 18 holes left. John’s 72 was the best gross score on the day, with Peter Mclean Jnr moving into third place when he recovered from a horror start to post a 76.

The handicap trophy was another tight affair with Jimmy MacNab showing the youngsters how it is done with a superb net 64, taking a one shot lead over David Ronald and a two-shot lead over James Smyth.

The John Reid Quaich, which is played as part of the championsh­ip, was won by Duncan Johnstone on 134, edging out Iain Macalister by one shot.

Despite the weather conditions, the members gathered in good spirits for the final round of the championsh­ip, a day that everyone looks forward to and with all competitio­ns very close an interestin­g day’s play lay ahead.

In the leading group play was a bit nervy and neither player was at their best on the front nine with Iain reducing the deficit to one shot with eight holes left to play. John got one back at the 11th and then another two at the 12th before a birdie at the 14th pretty much saw him home and dry. In the end John’s inward nine of 35 and a final round of 74 saw him win by six shots.

In the nett trophy 83-year-old Jimmy MacNab and David Ronald tied on 266 after scores of 69 and 68 respective­ly. David enjoyed three birdies in a row at six, seven and eight. Competitio­n rules dictate that in the event of a tie the lowest last 18 holes wins the trophy.

Best gross scores on the day were Duncan Johnstone on 72 and Bruce MacNab on 73, best nett were Iain MacArthur on 63 and Kenny MacFarlane on 66.

A delighted John MacNab received the Sam Andrews trophy from president Chris Smyth. He said that he was delighted to eventually get his hands on this coveted trophy after many years of trying and a few close misses. He congratula­ted the other winners, members and Graham Prentice for the presentati­on of the course.
