Ganavan ‘sold’ is untrue

A councillor has rubbished rumours that Ganavan has been sold.

A Facebook thread suggested the popular beach spot had been sold and was being kept hushed up by Argyll and Bute Council.

One post on Information Oban reported information had come from ‘a reliable source’ but said no one knew who the supposed buyer is.

Oban councillor Roddy McCuish says there is a narrow strip of council-owned land close to an old wooden bridge that has been marked out by yellow paint for sale or lease but no deal has been done. ‘Suggestions that we have sold Ganavan are just rumours. Why would we sell Ganavan when we only just spent thousands of pounds resurfacing it last year? I would have known if any land we own there had been sold or leased – it has to come to the council area committee first for ratification.’

However, Mr McCuish did say the land marked out by paint would be big enough ‘to get something on it,’ possibly a small business.

He added: ‘Our estates department has been tasked to get as much revenue as possible. Personally, I would rather see it leased than sold but neither has happened.

‘We’ve had public meetings about Ganavan being sold in the past. It’s a story that keeps getting recycled but there’s nothing in it.’

Oban councillor Elaine Robertson also said nothing had come to her attention but she would be asking council officers for more information.

‘I will be asking officers if they can give us some sort of briefing. Nothing has come to the area committee as far as I’m aware. The land was up for sale some time ago but then it was taken off again. I think people had shown interest at the time.’
