Rotary Club welcomes German contingent
Lochaber Rotary Club welcomed guests from Germany to its business meeting last week.
President Margarete Radermacher and five colleagues and partners from the Wipperfürth-Lindar/ Romerike Berge Rotary Club near Cologne, enjoyed an evening meal .
The club was also joined by Faye Steel, widow of Charlie Steel, one of the club’s founding members in 1949.
In addressing the club, Marga explained the short history of her club and the sort of activities it has been involved in. Its biggest forthcoming project will be to host an international student summer camp next August, an annual event that moves around the country.
In Lochaber, the German contingent visited Glenfinnan, Ben Nevis Distillery, the Commando Memorial, Glen Nevis, the West Highland Museum and Inverlochy Castle. They travelled on the Jacobite steam train, visited Armadale Castle and were based at Lochalsh.
On Skye they walked part of Glen Sligachan and visited Portree and Dunvegan Castle.
Past president Donald McCorkindale, who chaired the evening meeting, said: ‘Last week we welcomed a new member to Lochaber Rotary Club and in doing so were reminded we belong to an international fellowship. Today that is very real as we welcome Faye from Canada and fellow Rotarians from Germany.’
After a hearty welcome and tour of Lochaber, the German visitors headed east to Inverness, visiting Culloden, Clava Cairns and Cairngorm Mountain. After staying in Pitlochry, they visited the Wallace Monument and the Falkirk Wheel.
