Newtonmore and Rockfield primaries win shinty festival

-

Prior to Saturday’s Camanachd Cup Final at Mossfield, nine primary teams from the South area plus Newtonmore took part in a shinty festival to celebrate all that is great within youth Shinty.

The teams were split into two age groups; a P5-andunder section with four teams, and a P7-and-under section with five teams. All the games were refereed by senior pupils Lennon Campbell, Charlie Campbell-Roberts and Blair MacFarlane and got underway just after 11am.

The Primary 5 teams played each other twice to maximise their game time and after the league had finished it was clear Newtonmore were the strongest of the teams finishing at the top. The three other sides, Rockfield, Park and Kyles/Strachur were equally matched though and Rockfield finished second behind Newtonmore.

The Primary 7 section had the same teams represented plus an Inveraray side. Again each team found Isle competitive of games Seil within Junior the group Open but like the P5 section it was Rockfield and Newtonmore who finished top of the league. This league was decided with a final and despite some late pressure for Newtonmore the game went straight to penalties. Perhaps fittingly it was Rockfield who won the shoot-out after having finished top of the league section.

This was a great advert for youth shinty with the teams giving their all and respecting the officials who had also represented themselves very well after having only officiated a few matches prior to Saturday.
