Bookends is in full swing

The Victory Hall in Benderloch was packed with people – and books – on Saturday for the launch of this year’s Bookends Festival.

Joy Cameron and her nine-year-old assistant Elizabeth Needham declared the Bookends festival open just after 3pm.

Joy then read a poem to the audience titled I Opened a Book by Julia Donaldson.

‘Welcome to Bookends 2018. I want to thank everyone who has had anything to do with putting the festival together,’ she added. ‘To the librarians, the people who built the shelves, who brought books and the people here today.’

Over the weekend a number of events took place with renowned authors.

They proved popular with Jess Smith’s Travellers tales and songs topping of a terrific weekend, also comprising Kellan MacInnes, Morven May MacCallum and Alasdair Satchel.

Campbell Cameron said: ‘Earlier in the week Fletcher Mather and Alasdair McCrone were immense. The pair made us happy, sad, angry, delighted and enchanted all in one show. Incredibly, they played all 14 parts in Jim Cartwright’s tragi-comedic play set in a Highland pub – an immense undertaking delivered with style and aplomb.’

Events continue today (Thursday), with a bookbinding and gold tooling workshop tonight in the Victory Hall from 7.30pm.

Friday night will see the Hollow Mountain String Band playing, and on Saturday the festival will come to an end with authors Lorn McIntyre and Lachlan Munro.

The reading room will be open throughout from 11am until 6.30pm, where people can browse or borrow books or chat among themselves.
