MSP visits Fort college campus

-

Lochaber MSP and minister for public finance and digital economy Kate Forbes visited West Highland College UHI last week.

Ms Forbes met with Lydia Rohmer, principal and chief executive, and John Hutchison, chairman of the board of management, discussing progress on the college’s advanced plans for a multi-million pound centre for science, technology, health and engineering on the Blar Mor site in Fort William.

This state-of-the-art technology centre is part of the college’s strategy to develop Fort William into a major hub for learning in the West Highlands, complementing its existing campus at An Aird.

This aligns with the vision for Fort William 2040 and supports exciting economic developments in the area creating important new opportunities for everyone who wants to live, learn and work here.

Ms Forbes also had the opportunity to meet some of the HNC computing students who access their course from rural college locations from Elgin to Skye and the Western Isles.

Ms Forbes also heard from computing staff how the college had made significant efforts to build its computing portfolio of courses, working strategically with Highland secondary and primary schools.

There are around 200 students currently studying computing and digital skills qualifications at school and college level.
