MSP welcomes remote and rural healthcare faculty

-

The launch of a new faculty for remote and rural healthcare by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has been welcomed by MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch Kate Forbes.

The RCSEd said its aim is to ‘support the delivery of equitable, economically-viable access to integrated healthcare’ which will significantly improve health and medical outcomes for people living and working in far-flung regions.

Ms Forbes has met with representatives of the RCSEd several times, including hosting a discussion on the way forward for healthcare provision in remote areas like her constituency.

‘I have long made the point that support for remote and rural healthcare has got to be embedded in the royal colleges,’ she commented.

‘Soon after I was elected, I hosted a discussion with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh on remote and rural healthcare.

‘I’m absolutely delighted to see this announcement that the Royal College has launched a new faculty of remote and rural healthcare.

‘Of course, there are many communities across the planet who live in isolated and remote areas.

‘This faculty will, I hope, support the development of high quality healthcare in remote areas of Scotland, like my constituency, through research, innovation and training standards.

‘This is a fundamentally important step for one of the oldest surgical organisations in the world, which will improve outcomes in remote and rural areas like the Highlands.’

The new faculty will be based in Edinburgh.
