Haldenby Classic sees strongmen break records

-

Some of Scotland’s strongest men and women gathered in Fort William on Saturday to put their strength to the test in a gruelling day of competition which saw records smashed.

Organised by the town’s own well-known strongman competitor, Stuart Whyte, the Nevis Centre hosted an afternoon of strongman competitions as part of the annual Scotland’s Strongest Team strongman event, as well as the Haldenby Classic events. There was even a chance for some aspiring lifters to get involved with a ‘strong kids’ event taking place as well.

This is the fifth year Fort William has hosted a major event in memory of Mark Haldenby, who was a well known local strongman.

Record

It was Whyte and Eben van Wyk who took first place and set a new Scottish record of 635kg in the axle deadlift. Sean Peatfield and Gavin Bruce finished second, while Martin Lennox and Christopher Watson took third place.

Whyte’s performance on Saturday adds to his impressive results earlier in the year when he took joint third place in the 105kg log press

at the recent Scottish Fitness and Nutrition (SFN) Expo

2018 in the SECC, Glasgow. In the women’s competitions, Debra Clarkson took the top prize, with Gillian Maitland finishing second and Shauna Moar in third.

The event raised a total of £2,000 which will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Research.
