Brown Owl takes flight after 42 years

-

Brown Owl Caroline MacInnes has ‘pack’-ed in Brownies after 42 years of fun Friday nights.

The 61-year-old started up 5th Oban Brownies back in 1979 because there were so many little girls waiting to join the town’s full-up Thursday night group.

Now Mrs MacInnes is looking forward to having more free time on a Friday to spend with husband Iain and visit their three grandchildren in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

‘I think 42 years must be a record for here – I don’t know anyone else who has served for so long. I’ve loved every minute of it but it’ll be good to have Friday nights back. I’m sure my husband will be happy about that as we’ve got a few nights out to catch up. It’ll be nice to have more family time. Iain has been so supportive,’ she said.

There have been many highlights over the years. The Brownies have celebrated their 75th, 90th and 100th anniversaries but for Mrs MacInnes it has been seeing the children enjoy themselves that she has enjoyed the most.

More helpers are needed to run the Friday nights at the Guide Hut off Soroba Road.

Assistant leader Louisa Hyde also left on Friday after 15 years. ‘She only came to help out once and never got away,’ said Mrs MacInnes.
