There has been a welcome rise in awareness about mental health issues in the workplace.

This year’s Lochaber Ideas Week focused on this crucial topic with a special Mental Wellness in Business event sponsored by Developing the Young Workforce West Highland.

The mental health charity Birchwood Highland led an interesting ‘toolbox’ talk that challenged our assumptions about mental health and introduced the concept of packing a mental health selfcare toolkit with tools to take care of our mental well-being.

These tools will differ for everyone, but it could be as simple as spending time out in nature, eating healthily and making time in our busy lives for hobbies and interests.

Josh Quigley, known as the Tartan Explorer, gave a fascinating and moving presentation about his own incredible journey from successful young entrepreneur to inspirational mental health campaigner. He talked about the importance of opening up to others and taking small positive steps.

Addiction and mental health issues were also explored by former No 10 communications director Alastair Campbell in his fascinating Charles Kennedy lecture during Ideas Week.

He talked of his own struggles with addiction as well as those of his friends and focused on the importance of friendship and non-judgemental support.

Personal issues don’t stop at the office door – they can affect us in the workplace too.

At this festive time of year, let’s offer the gift of really listening to our friends and colleagues and supporting each other.

Merry Christmas healthy New Year. and
