Lorne’s fixture falls victim to the weather

-

Oban Lorne’s fixture away to Millbrae in West Division 2 on Saturday fell victim to the wintry weather conditions along with the vast majority of the regional fixtures over the weekend.

The Oban squad members made the decision at 9am on Saturday morning not to make the trip to Ayr for fear of returning in dangerous driving conditions that could have put the squad’s safety at significant risk.

This proved to be a sensible decision with road conditions on the A85 at Tyndrum in particular causing huge problems for commuters on Saturday evening.

With one half of the 2018/2019 season played Oban Lorne sit third in the league winning eight and losing four of their 12 fixtures played so far.

This is a decent return for a team who is in transition both in terms of personnel and playing style.

Head coach Andrew Johnston has blooded in a number of young players since the start of the season including David Cameron, Lorne Sinclair and James Divers, who have all impressed and have become mainstays in the squad selection as the season has progressed.

Experienced newcomers such as Eric Roberts and Owen McDonald have bolstered the young side who will continue to develop both individually and as a squad over the coming months.

Craig Wright at full back has contributed to the team’s effort of 407 points scored with his impressive haul of 24 tries in so far, working out at two tries per league game played. Wright will be hoping to continue his scoring streak over the next 10 matches.

Next up for Oban Lorne is the visit of league leaders Lenzie RFC to Glencruitten on Saturday January 5.

An Oban Lorne win would reignite the promotion chase with Lenzie currently sitting a comfortable 13 points ahead of their nearest challengers, Uddingston RFC.
