New depute ‘privileged’ to work at Kinlochleven

-

Kinlochleven High School has a new depute head following the retirement of long-serving teacher Gordon Milne.

After 13 years at Kinlochleven High School as principal teacher, depute and acting head teacher, Mr Milne retired in October having supported every aspect of school life.

His replacement, Joe Hannaway, who started at the school this week, is keen to pick up where his predecessor left off.

Formerly employed at Keswick School in the Lake District, he said he ‘feels privileged' to have arrived at Kinlochleven, ‘swapping one beautiful setting for another'.

Mr Hannaway, who teaches maths, said: ‘One of the things that drew me to Kinlochleven was the fantastic sense of community at the school. I have received the warmest of welcomes from everyone, for which I am truly grateful.

‘I have operated in a variety of roles previously, supporting students through their induction into the school, guiding them through the options process and helping them upon leaving school, whether that be to higher education, training or employment.

‘I am passionate about supporting our young people, offering them advice, guidance and encouragement on a journey that will hopefully result in success. I am certain I can make a significant contribution to the wider life of the school, working closely with a fantastic team of staff to ensure all of students produce the desirable outcomes that will provide a foundation on which they can build a successful career.

‘Even though I fully recognise exam results are a vital component for many careers, I firmly believe it is equally important students receive a varied education, one where they learn how to be well-rounded citizens, contributing positively to society, recognising that success comes in many forms. It has been my experience that students positively thrive in an environment where their well-being is woven into the very fabric of the community, allowing them to feel safe, secure and supported, while affording them the opportunity to realise their full potential.

'Given that I am new to the area, I would encourage you to introduce yourself should you see me around school, or anywhere else. I look forward to meeting many of you in the weeks and months to come.'
