Club in call for more cricketers

-

While Lochaber is renowned only for its long shinty and football tradition, other local sports have been thriving, such as cricket.

Last season saw Fort William Cricket Club clinch a fine array of silverware, all won against strong opposition from clubs across the country with considerably more heritage and experience, which further underlines the sporting talent in the area.

However, with the start of the cricket season getting closer, Fort William CC, now in its 11th season, are on the lookout for new members.

Training has already begun with indoor sessions at the Nevis Centre, which have attracted a few new converts to the wicket but, as with all teams, there is always room for more.

Matches are played at the former BA parks next to the Stramash Nursery, where an area is set aside for the cricketers and kept carefully groomed for the best playing surface.

Perhaps one of the most famous expressions in cricket is ‘rain stopped play’ and, of course, given the equally famous Lochaber climate, it may be a surprise to some that cricket matches go ahead in the area.

In fact, matches are rarely called off and, with some clever forward planning, even a quick move to a less wet location such as Fort Augustus means not that many cancellations.

In pleasant weather it can be very relaxing just going along to watch the team in action when they are at home and, of course, spectators are always welcome. However, to build the team and aim for other awards in 2019, a healthy squad of participants is also needed.

Information is readily available on the club Facebook page, but direct contact can also be made with Kevin O’Meara on 07796 685242 or Charlie Luxton on 07500 009075.

Training takes place in the Nevis Centre on Sundays from 10am to 12.30pm.
