Funding boost for women’s and girls’ health on Islay and Jura

Swimming lessons, healthy cooking classes and beauty therapy for women and girls on Islay and Jura are among 204 projects sharing in £1.5 million of National Lottery funding.

The cash from National Lottery Awards for All Scotland goes to 204 community, sports and arts projects across the country, many of which will break down barriers to physical activity for people of all ages and abilities.

Islay and Jura Community Enterprise will receive £5,919 to provide a range of sport and leisure activities at the Mactaggart Leisure Centre in Bowmore.

Islay and Jura Community Enterprise­s chief executive Gary Scott said: ‘We are delighted to receive this National Lottery award which will help make sport and leisure more inclusive for women and girls living on Islay and Jura.

‘We plan to provide swimming instructio­n classes, healthy cooking and eating workshops, gym advice and instructio­n, beauty therapy and nails, together with basic DIY in the home. There’s something for everyone.’

A National Lottery Awards for All Scotland spokespers­on said: ‘With spring just around the corner, it’s a great time to be getting out and about to enjoy a range of physical activities.

‘Thanks to National Lottery players, this will now be possible for many people across Scotland who will be able to take part in a range of health and wellbeing activities, whether that’s walking or cycling, dancing, taking up a new sport or enjoying outdoor nature pursuits.’
