Rotary hears about impact of cancer work over 40 years

-

Guest speaker at the Rotary business lunch meeting on February 20 was Robyn Robb, community engagement manager with Cancer Research UK with responsibility for the Highlands and Islands.

In a very engaging presentation, Robyn spoke about the amazing progress in cancer research over the past 40 years and about the impact that 'Gifts in Wills' has on the charity, making up one third of the research funds.

Cancer Research UK funds research into more than 200 cancers and has seen survival rates triple in breast cancer since the 1970s. The charity looks at prevention, making diagnosis easier through its screening programmes, making better and more effective treatments and making sure that those going through cancer treatment are given the right treatment at the right time.

Robyn said: 'Gifts in Wills allow us to also plan for future research. We are currently partnering with solicitors around the UK to work with us to beat cancer sooner. We offer a free will service to anyone over 55 years old, whereby you can have a simple will written for free with one of our solicitors and include, if you wish a gift to Cancer Research UK although there is no obligation to do so.'

On behalf of the club, pastpresident David Thomson thanked Robyn for a very informative and encouraging talk and members responded with warm applause.
