‘It’s never acceptable to travel at 106mph but if you’re going to do it...the straight at Arrivain is probably the safest.’

A motorcyclist has been fined and received seven points on his licence for driving at 106mph on the A85 at Arrivain Farm.

Robert Alexander Floyd, 39, of 52 Redhouse Road, Seafield, Bathgate pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, as well as having an unregulated licence plate, and a modified exhaust.

He pleaded guilty when he appeared in Oban Sheriff Court on Monday March 11, however, the incident took place on May 27, 2018.

Procurator fiscal Eoin McGinty said: ‘Police officers were carrying out speed checks. They saw a blue motorcycle approach and they could tell immediately it was travelling too fast. As it passed, the speed was 106mph.’

In Floyd’s defence, his solicitor stated that the bike had been purchased with the modified exhaust.

He added: ‘It’s never acceptable to travel at 106mph, but if you are going to do it anywhere on the A85, the straight at Arrivain is probably the safest.’

However, he added: ‘Public roads are not race tracks and he is aware of that and it was a one-off.’

Sheriff Patrick Hughes said: ‘There’s a genuine problem with this stretch of road, particularly with motorcycles.’

Sheriff Hughes fined Floyd a total of £690 – £450 for travelling at 106mph, and £240 for the non-compliant exhaust and licence plate.

Floyd’s licence was also endorsed with seven penalty points.
