A seven-year-old from Fort William has been praised for her quick thinking and cool head after her younger brother was badly injured in a fall.

Niamh Campbell and Hamish, aged five, were recently walking to their home in Achintore from Lundavra Primary School when Hamish fell and hit his head, ending up in a pool of blood.

Hamish’s mum Anne Marie Campbell, who works at Nevis Range, said: ‘Niamh didn’t panic. She immediately went to get the headteacher who took them both to the Belford Hospital.

‘Once there, Niamh provided medical staff with Hamish’s details such as how the accident happened, his date of birth and his address and who his parents were. She was such a trooper. We are so proud of her that she kept calm and reacted the way she did.’

Hamish’s head wound was glued and sealed with butterfly stitches at the hospital’s accident and emergency department.

‘Naturally, when I got the call from the school secretary that Hamish was in the A&E department at the hospital I immediately rushed over,’ added Anne Marie, whose husband Derick works as a manager with the Travelodge chain. The couple also have an older daughter, Erin, aged nine.

‘Derick is a first aid instructor with Lochaber Sea Cadets and has always impressed on the children how important it is to remain calm if they can if there is an accident and to try to remember important information that could help the emergency services. It looks like that has rubbed off on Niamh. She was brilliant.’
