Lochaber curlers hammer home victory at Braehead

-

Lochaber Curling Club last week snatched the prestigious Strathcona Cup away from holders Oban.

Teams from Oban, Glenorchy and Lochaber curling clubs took part in the annual competition at Braehead Curling Club, Glasgow.

This magnificent trophy has been competed for by curling clubs in North Argyll and Lochaber since it was presented by Lord Strathcona in the early 1900s and, as usual, the games involving these three clubs were keenly contested.

Games were played on a round robin basis, with each game consisting of five ends.

In the first game, Oban, holders for the past three years, drew with Lochaber 3-3 and then beat Glenorchy 5-4.

The final game between Lochaber and Glenorchy resulted in Lochaber winning 6-3.

As Oban and Lochaber had both won one game and drawn the other, the destiny of the cup was decided in shots difference and as Lochaber had a greater shots difference in their two games, they pipped Oban to the trophy.

The winning team of John Ferguson, Gavin Reid, Gerald MacIntyre and skipper David Mee were presented with the cup by Catriona O’Keefe of Glenorchy.

Oban: skipper David Howie, Fraser Inglis, Graham Innes and Walter Speirs.

Glenorchy: skipper Ian Provan, Iain Wragg, Martin O’Keefe and Catriona O’Keefe.
