SLT frustrated at loss away to Westerlands

-

South Lochaber Thistle suffered another league setback when they were beaten 3-2 by Westerlands in the Greater Glasgow Premier League.

The Jags were keen to make amends after their defeat in the Scottish Cup second round last week but could not see out the game.

The Kinlochleven outfit opened the scoring, with skipper Martin Munro burying an accomplished finish with seven minutes on the clock.

The Jags were moving the ball well with their usual rhythm but the home side leveled the match with 20 minutes played after an error at the back.

Five minutes later, Westerlands took the lead. A flat-footed defence were out-witted and conceded a second to leave SLT 2-1 down.

As the half was drawing to a close, veteran midfielder Dave Forbes used all his years of experience to power home a peach of a free kick to level the encounter at 2-2 at the break.

In the second half, Thistle pressed and were on the end of some questionable decisions. Munro was felled on the edge of the box, having taken his first touch whilst clear of the following defender. Before he could take his second touch, to go one on one with the keeper, he was wiped out by the defender.

There was bemusement at how the referee only brandished a yellow card when a red should have been the result under the laws of the game.

Westerlands then took advantage of a momentary lapse in concentration which saw a striker pounce on a parried save from the Jags keeper to edge themselves ahead 3-2.

With some backs to the wall defending, Westerlands held out despite the best efforts of substitute Sean Noble and battling midfielder Cameron Grant who did their best to wrest the impetus back for the visitors.

An obviously disappointed manager Alan Gray said afterwards: ‘This was a tough one to take.

‘We played pretty in patches and we know it will come good.

‘On our day we can beat anyone in this league as we’ve proved time and again.

‘At the moment, some ill discipline, individual errors and some puzzling refereeing decisions are just mounting up against us.

‘I’m sure the boys will be back stronger next week.’
