Stevenson Street shines

-

State-of-the-art lighting transformed a dreich and drizzly Tuesday evening into a sparkling spectacle with the Shine a Light on Oban project casting its colours over the Black Lynn.

Permanent illumination of the tree outside the Rockfield Centre was also included in this stage of the project.

Councillor Elaine Robertson, chairwoman of Oban Community Good Fund (OCGF), performed the switch-on duties in front of a large crowd who had turned out despite the weather.

Mrs Robertson said: ‘It was a pleasure to switch on the first phase of the Light up Oban project. The OCGF was delighted to work in partnership with BID4Oban in a project benefiting both our community and our visitors. My thanks to all involved.’

Funded by OCGF and BID4Oban, the new illuminations use eco-friendly low energy lighting, and will be switched on between dusk and 11.30pm each evening, flooding the water and foliage of the Black Lynn from Combie Street Bridge to Oban Dove Centre with coloured light.

Shine a light on Oban is a series of projects funded by BID4Oban to illuminate various locations within the town.

Andrew Spence on behalf of BID4Oban said: ‘This project is one of eight locations in Oban we have identified to illuminate. In future years, we want to work with other areas of the town to improve the ambience and attractiveness.

‘BID4Oban is entering its eighth year and this project is another example of the business community of Oban investing and improving the towns infrastructure.’

The Lorne Bar and the Ranald Hotel took advantage of BID4Oban business improvement grants to illuminate the outside of their premises.

Oban FM was on hand on the night, and volunteers from the Dove Centre served hot soup at their charity stall.
