Sea Cadets save Remembrance Day parade from being forgotten
‘It is so important that we come together to remember.’
Oban Remembrance Day parade and poppy appeal have been saved thanks to Oban Sea Cadets (OSC) and a local councillor.
Previously organised by the Oban branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS), the traditional Armistice Day events, held to remember members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty, were put in jeopardy after the local RBLS officially closed its doors in February this year.
At the time a spokesperson said that an Armistice Day committee was being formed to organise this year’s event but, with the November 11 date drawing ever closer, nothing seemed to be happening.
Taking up the story, the Reverend Peter Park, chaplain of Oban Sea Cadets, said: ‘We were waiting to hear what was happening for this year’s parade and nothing was forthcoming so I got in touch with Councillor Jim Lynch and we decided to organise it between us.
‘We all feel that it’s dreadfully important to keep the Remembrance Day parade going and Oban Sea Cadets are honoured to be leading this year’s commemorative event.
‘OSC have expertise in ceremonial events such as this and it will offer our young ladies and gentlemen a chance to show what they can do as well as pay tribute to the many young people who have lost their lives in the line of duty.’
This year’s parade will take place on Sunday November 10, mustering at the Corran Halls at 10am with the parade starting at 10.30am. A service will be held at the war memorial from 10.50am11.20am approximately. The parade commander is Frank McKenna.
Councillor Lynch added: ‘I am delighted that Peter and the Sea Cadets are taking this on. It is so important that we, as a community, come together to remember and pay tribute to the sacrifices that our own servicemen and women made and continue to make.’
Petty Officer Rab Neil, of Oban Sea Cadets, has also come on board and will take on the role of poppy day coordinator, organising collection tins.
Contact Rev Park (01631 565849) for more information on the parade or PO Neil on 07876 697415 to arrange to have a collection tin for the poppy appeal.
