People on Skye invited to discuss recycling plan

-

Zero Waste Scotland will be visiting Portree to talk with local businesses and community members about a new recycling scheme that is coming to Skye.

The event on Friday November 1 will let people know about the new Deposit Return Scheme that adds a 20p deposit to single-use drinks containers made of materials like plastic, glass or aluminium.

People get their money back when returning empty containers for recycling and the scheme is expected to give people an incentive to litter less and recycle more.

Jill Farrell, chief operating officer at Zero Waste Scotland, said: ‘We want to make sure Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme works for the whole of the country. That’s why we are visiting Skye to speak with residents, businesses and stakeholders. We want to benefit from their insight into how this will work for the islands.

Zero Waste Scotland helped the government design this scheme and is especially interested in hearing from island-based businesses like drink producers and tourism companies.

‘Making the scheme a success on Skye,’ continued Ms Farrell, ‘will require different approaches from in Scotland’s cities. From logistics and transport, to cash flow and tourism, we look forward to discussing how we can work together to deliver a world-class scheme.’

There is a target of catching 90 per cent of all scheme containers which means making it accessible and practical for everyone in Scotland.

Alastair Nicolson, programme manager at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said: ‘This is a very ambitious scheme that aims to make a real difference to people and communities in every part of Scotland.

‘It’s great that the needs of islanders are being recognised at this early stage of the Deposit Return Scheme through this programme of events on the ground and online.’

The event will take place at Aros, Portree, on Friday November 1 from 10am to 1pm and to register to take part go to bit.ly/ DepositReturnSkye.

If you are unable to attend there will be a webinar held after all the island events are complete to give people a chance to learn more.
