OBANG! Here we go again...

- By Fiona Scott fscott@obantimes.co.uk

Remember, remember the fifth of November 2011, when all the fireworks were mistakenly let off at once and the Oban Community fireworks display lasted one minute instead of 30 minutes?

Well that couldn’t possibly happen again, could it?

Bid4Oban is promising the town the ‘biggest fireworks display ever’ on Tuesday November 5, thanks to a £6,000 Heart of the Communities funding boost from Scottish Sea Farms.

And Bid’s Andrew Spence admits that, ‘when you are dealing with so many fireworks, who knows what can happen’.

He said: ‘Oban made the national headlines in 2011 and, hopefully, for all the right reasons, this year’s event will be equally spectacular.’

This year’s November 5 celebrations will take place at 7pm for 7.30pm, when the fireworks will be set off from the Northern Lighthouse Board Pier.

‘The best views will be from the esplanade and North Pier,’ added Mr Spence. ‘We would urge people to stay safe and view the display from town.’

Adding to the evening, the Oban FM roadshow will be in Station Square, where soup and burgers will also be available.

District (Bid4Oban) and

Scottish Sea Farms, the event is also supported by Northern Lighthouse Board, Argyll and Bute Council and the Auxiliary Coastguard.

There will also be a fireworks and bonfire night in Dunbeg on Saturday November 2, which is organised by the community. Proceeds from the event will go to Oban High School Pipe Band.

The bonfire will be lit at 7pm at Lochnell Road car park in the village.

There will be a raffle, burger and bottle stalls, the Oban FM roadshow, with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and Peppa Pig all in attendance.

Last year, the event raised £3,550 for a three-year-old Dunbeg boy diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
